INTRODUCTION

Preparation and edition of the publications in compliance with the international standards, improvement of gender statistics are of great importance to study equality problems and to develop an appropriate policy.

Women and Men in Georgia is second statistical publication on gender problems. As to format and contents, this abstract against the last abstract is more close to the international statistical standards. Sources of information are statistical surveys, conducted by State Department for statistics and other bodies, and also materials, re-ceived from the state bodies.

Last time in the world the agenda had been included not only a problem of improvement of women's status, but also the problem of achievement of actual equality between women and men in all spheres of public activity. Just to this matter the plan of actions, ac-cepted by the fifth Women World Conference in 1995 was devoted, according to which in February 1998 the Decree of the President of Georgia "State Commission on elaboration of policy on development of women" had been established, which had been charged to de-velop the plan of actions to improve women's status in Georgia. Commission has prepared the project of the plan and by Resolution of the President of Georgia the plan of measures to improve women's status in the country (for 1998-2000) had been approved, in which from twelve priorities of Beijing platform are selected following seven:

1.Establishment of institutional mechanisms for gender equality.
2.Growth of role and participation of women in decision-making processes.
3.Economic policy.
4.Women and poverty.
5.Women and armed conflicts.
6.Improvement of women health.
7.Women rights.
